My three girls have no interest in the business so my five year old grandson (who is interested in antiques and dinosaurs) will be working with me for the next few weeks on a trial basis. He is trying to raise money to buy new dinosaurs. I made a deal with him that he could pick and list one item per week and that he could keep half of the money and the other half he will donate to a local school system. I told him that he will have to pick out the item, describe it and help with the photographs and listing.
I will list his description first and then clarify if needed in the description.
THIS IS A OLD DRINKING CUP MADE OUT OF PEWTER.
IT IS GRAY AND VERY HARD.
I HAVE SOLD A LOT OF PIECES OF PEWTER BUT I HAVE NEVER SOLD A CUP LIKE THIS.
PAPPY TELLS ME THAT ANOTHER NAME FOR A CUP BACK THEN WAS A "TUMBLER".
IT LOOKS LIKE A GLASS THAT I USE AT HOME TO DRINK OUT OF AND THAT IS WHAT THIS WAS FOR.
IT IS OVER 100 YEARS OLD AND PAPPY TELLS ME IT WAS MADE BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR WHICH I KNOW WAS IN 1860 SO IT IS OVER 160 YEARS OLD.
IN ONE OF MY PICTURE IT LOOKS LIKE I AM DRINKING OUT OF IT BUT I AM NOT. PAPPY TOLD ME THAT OLD PEWTER WAS MADE WITH LEAD AND HE TOLD ME THAT LEAD IS VERY BAD FOR US IF WE DRINK IT OR EAT IT.
SO, IF YOU BUY THIS PLEASE DON'T DRINK OUT OF IT BECAUSE IT CAN MAKE YOU VERY SICK.
IT IS IN VERY NICE CONDITION AND I COULD NOT FIND ANY BREAKS OR PIECES MISSING BUT THERE ARE A COUPLE OF DENTS AND BUMPS.
IT IS 1 3/4" ACROSS ON THE BOTTOM AND IT IS 4 1/4" TALL.
A VERY NICE EARLY 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN PEWTER TUMBLER OR DRINKING CUP IN OLD COLOR AND SURFACE PATINA.
Unmarked but probably New England, circa 1840-1860.
A NICE EARLY FORM WITH A TAPERED SIDE.
IT IS IN FINE CONDITION WITH NO BREAKS OR SPLITS BUT SOME DENTS THROUGHOUT.
OLD GRUNGY PATINA.
1 3/4" across THE BASE AND 4 1/2" tall.
Typical wear and imperfections with age as described above.
