Early Primitive Metal Drum Coffee Bean Roaster
Here is an interesting old piece dating back to the latter half of the 1800’s. Probably a staple in most every home was the coffee bean roaster. This example sits in a metal frame so it could be placed directly over the hole in the wood stove. Coffee beans were placed in the metal drum and continually cranked to keep the beans moving so as not to scorch. Beans were added and removed through the hole with a sliding cover on top of the drum. From there the next stop would be the coffee grinder. It’s a neat little piece; a folded and riveted frame of sheet metal with little ears on the sides to rest the drum and crank. The drum has aforementioned sliding door with the hole to add and remove beans. A heavier metal handle is attached to one long side to hold onto the frame while you’re cranking. This handle is marked with the letter N in a circle. The frame measures 8 3/4 long and 7 inches wide. It is 3 inches deep. The drum barrel is 7 inches long with almost 5 inches in diameter. The overall assembled height is 5 7/8 inches. It is in good condition for an antique piece of its age. There are little dings/dents to the barrel of the drum. Overall it is a great old primitive piece with nice patina and it is very clean coffee roaster with little to no rust.
