    AN EXTREMELY RARE AND IMPORTANT AMERICAN PILGRIM PERIOD 17TH CENTURY CARVED AND DECORATED BIBLE BOX WITH FANTASTIC FLUTE CARVED DECORATION ON THE FRONT AND STILL RETAINING TRACES OF ITS ORIGINAL GRUNGY SURFACE.
    PROBABLY THE MARSHFIELD, MA AREA, CIRCA 1680-1700 IN RED AND WHITE OAK WITH A WHITE PINE BOTTOM.
    A VERY RARE SURVIVOR WITH CARVING THAT RELATES TO OTHER KNOWN EXAMPLE FORM THE MARSHFIELD, MA TO DEDHAM, MA AREA OF EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS.
    SEE "THE WROUGHT COVENANT" by Robert Blair St. George, and "FURNITURE TREASURY", by Wallace Nutting for documents pieces from Marshfield and Dedham, MA with similar carvings and woods used.
    THE FLUTED CARVED ELEMENTS ARE NEARLY IDENTICAL TO THE EXAMPLES DESCRIBED.
    THIS GREAT BOX WAS IN THE FUSSENICH COLLECTION BACK IN THE TURN OF THE LAST CENTURY.
    FUSSENICH WAS A CONTEMPORARY OF WALLACE NUTTING AND THE OTHER EARLY CONNECTICUT COLLECTORS OF PILGRIM CENTURY FURNITURE SUCH AS IRVING AND BARBOUR AND MANY OF THE FUSSENICH PIECES ARE IN MAJOR MUSEUMS AND COLLECTIONS.
    THE BOX IS A MIXTURE OF RED AND WHITE OAK WITH A WHITE PINE BOTTOM.
    NEARLY ALL OF ITS ORIGINAL ROSE HEAD NAILS ARE STILL INTACT.
    IT STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL TOP AS ITS ORIGINAL WROUGHT IRON SNIPE HINGES.
    THE OLD LOCK COULD BE ORIGINAL BUT THE HASP IS MISSING.
    IT HAS A NICE OLD MELLOW SURFACE AND PATINA WITH TRACES OF THE ORIGINAL SURFACE STILL INTACT.
    IT HAS ITS ORIGINAL APPLIED BASE MOLDINGS, AGAIN WITH WONDERFUL ORIGINAL ROSE HEAD NAILS.
    A wonderful early example of an AMERICAN Pilgrim Period Carved BIBLE Box.
    The original wrought iron lock plate on the front is still intact, (see photos).
    Great old surface and patina. The piece was never painted and still retains A FANTASTIC OLD grungy surface with traces of the original dark stain and vanish still present.
    THE CONDITION IS VERY FINE.
    THERE IS AN OLD 19TH CENTURY 3" REPLACEMENT OF BASE MOLDING ON THE LEFT SIDE, (SEE PHOTOS).
    THE ORIGINAL TOP STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL WROUGHT IRON STRAP HINGES BUT THE UNDERSIDE BATTENS ARE MISSING AND THE EDGES APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN REWORKED.
    23" wide, 16" deep and 9 1/2" high.
    Typical wear associated with the age of the item. Other minor repairs consistent with age and use.
